New Proposed Rules
Modified By tsgcadmin1 on 6/29/2008 10:02:23 PM)

Since the post of the proposed rules for the tournament evaporated into ether, I have had a chance to relook what I originally posted and see if those rules still make sense.  First of all, I heard from the Western 3 Gun guys and they pointed out they should have their own division rules since they are so different (in more ways than one).  I agree and have incorporated those rules below.  I also had a complaint or two about using IMGA and Horner Method rules versus USPSA.  After looking at it over a few days, I still think IMGA is the way to go for the following reasons:

1.                  IMGA rules are simpler.  I really applaud USPSA for having extensive rules but quite frankly, for Multigun, you need to use no less than five rule books (Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun, Tournament, and Multigun).  Most people haven’t read the Handgun rule book, much less the others.  The IMGA rules adopted by most other Multigun/3 gun matches are much less complex but still adequate, in my opinion, to run a match safely and efficiently.

2.                   IMGA/Horner method of Time Plus is much easier to score and less prone to error than USPSA San Angelo method (you MUST have a computer and program to score).  With time plus, results can be available immediately following the match.  Score sheets are somewhat simpler, and you can use a variety of paper targets.

3.                  I want to attract some new shooters.  I think the complexities of USPSA MG/3 Gun discourages potential new shooters.  I talked with several individuals and their basic questions were about equipment.  IMGA is much easier to understand with far less rules.  In essence you have 4 classes.  Open (practically anything goes), Tactical Optics (basically all other guns unless they have Open modifications, and the rifle can have 1 optic), Tactical Iron Sights (same as Tactical Optics but no optic on rifle), and Heavy Metal.  Of course there is Western 3 Gun.

Here are the proposed rules again.

Re: New Proposed Rules
Tom, I like the new rules. I don't have to think about hit factor, or scoring %, and I strongly agree that long range rifle targets are worth more than a 25 yrd target. Ya know, make a rifle be used for a rifle. I know some prefer USPSAbut these rules are more user and new shooter friendly. Thanks Tom for staying on the cutting edge.

Re: New Proposed Rules

When we started shooting USPSA I was one of the first to join.  I am opposed to letting our affiliation with USPSA laspe.  How will we shoot pistol matches under these new proposed rules?  Not everyone is a 3 gun enthusiast.  In your last post, you stated that participation was down on pistol matches.  There were only 2 matches scheduled in '07 and 3 matches scheduled in '08, and one of those has already been cancelled, if I remember correctly.  It's hard to attract new pistol shooters with so few matches scheduled.  Over the past few weeks I talked with other pistol shooters who share my views and I told them that I would try and post again because my orginal post was lost.   I have no objections to 3 gun or multi-gun matches, I just hate to see USPSA pistol shooters completely edged out.

Re: New Proposed Rules

Daniel & Sherl, You bring up some very good arguments.

First of all, participation for Pistol only matches is pretty low and quite frankly, never has had the following that 3 Gun does.  Our first matches in 2005 rarely had over 10 competitors.  Some of our early shooters just don’t show up anymore (either they no longer shoot practical pistol or they shoot somewhere else).  Each has their own reason, and talking to them, I don’t think it’s because of our club or our matches.  Sometimes it’s just the timing or family and work commitments.  Sometimes it’s they would rather not compete anymore or just enjoy another form of shooting.  With that said, when I first started USPSA, I said I wanted input and would listen to everyone to make our matches flexible enough so we didn’t shut anyone out.  Here’s what I think we can do, at least for the rest of this year.

First, we have had 3 matches this year, so we need 5 more to qualify for recertification with USPSA next year.  Also, the Area 6 3 Gun Match has been moved to the second weekend in November, which would be one of our regular match weekends.  I propose we add a pistol only match in August and make it a Special Classifier with 2 classifiers (with the classifier we ran in Jan, we would then meet the 3 classifiers required for the year).  I also propose that the November match be changed to a pistol only match since most of the 3 gun shooters will be in Atlanta.  That would give us 4 pistol only and 4 3 Gun/Multigun matches for the year.

Second, I would like to have a co-match director to take some of the burden off of my back.  The 3 gun matches pretty much need to be setup on the day before because they tend to be a little more complex however the pistol only matches can pretty much be setup on the morning of the match.  I will continue to run the 3 Gun matches this year but I would like a volunteer to set up and run the pistol only matches.  A match director must be a club member and should be an RO but as long as an RO checks each of the stages, that's not really a requirement as long as we have an RO and club member on each squad.  I can still do the Power Point descriptions and score sheets as well as tallying the final scores.  I would eventually like to transition more so we can build a better leadership base and grown participation. Young Blood Needed.

Comments are welcome so please chime in (and volunteer).

Re: New Proposed Rules

A.  I liked the balance of pistol only and three gun matches we have had in the past.   I don't care much for the long range rifle stages - prefer close in tactical shooting more in line with potential in house defensive shooting.

B.  I'm neutral on USPSA affiliation.   Please opt one way or the other - I'm due for renewal this month.  Have no reason to renew if we opt out.

Bob
