Update on plates in Bay 3

Just wanted  to update you all on the status of the plates in Bay 3.  First of all, the timer I put in the bay has malfunctioned and I brought it home to see if it is fixable.  Secondly, the posts supporting the plates have been pretty much shot away.  Two were completely shot through and broke off about a foot below the plates and the others are about ready to do the same.  I don't know whether to attribute that to a lot of shooting or just missing the plates.  Either way, while we could continue to replace the wood posts, I think a better way would be to replave the wood with steel.

I have brought home 5 of the old wheel stands that no one uses anymore and have made 1 prototype so far.  I has a 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 angle welded to the wheel with a peice of 1/2 " rebar running up the inside and supporting the plate.  While the angle will probably get shot over time, it should last a lot longer than the wood and shouldn't be too difficult to replace.  I'll probably have the others done by the club meeting.

Tom

Re: Update on plates in Bay 3
Got the other 4 done Wednesday and they are currently set up on Bay 3.  I think the design will stand prolonged shooting ( I fired 50 round at them ) but if the welds break, I'll just beef them up.  Also, out of the 50,  none hit the uprights so I'm issuing a challenge NOT to be the first .  Tom

Further update.  We held our first "alternate match instead of falling plates" on Sunday and I think everyone had a good time.  We did find the weak points with the new support system.  After about 500 rounds, we did have some welds break on the rebar.  We did get finished but we had to revert to some visegrips and clamps.  I will bring the supports home this week and reinforce them now that I know where the torque and pressure points are.

Re: Update on plates in Bay 3
Tom I know this is the first post in a year for this thread.  I just wanted you to know I love shooting the Steel targets you fixed up.  I have shot more than 5000 rounds on Lane three and love shooting the plates.  I did want to tell you that one of the plates bloke sometime during the last couple of weeks.  I placed it on the porch of the shed on the pistol range.
