Lubalox coated bullets
I am a reloader, but feel this is a better spot for my question. I am considering loading some Lubalox coated bullets for my 270, the Combined Technology silver tips. My question is this, are there any special steps or cleaners I should used as far as barrel care when firing these projectiles. I also request any info or experiences you all may have with these bullets. Thank you in advance, James.

Re: Lubalox coated bullets

James,

There is no special way to clean your barrel after shooting the lubalox coated bullets.  Treat them the same as you would copper jacketed bullets.  Lubalox is not a moly coating, as widely believed.  You can go to Winchester's website and verify for yourself.  I have been shooting them for years, and have not had a problem.  If interested, I could give you some of my loads to save you some time and money.

What is the difference between Lubalox and Moly Coating?

Lubalox Coating:

  • Black oxide
  • First used in early 1990
  • Does not increase diameter of bullet
  • Used on Accubond CT®, Ballistic Silvertip®, E-tip and XP3® product lines
  • Does not harm barrel
  • Reduces barrel fouling
  • Does not require barrel "seasoning"

Hope this helps.

Eric

Moly Coating:

  • Molybdenum Disulfide
  • First used in late 1990
  • Increases diameter of bullet
  • Was used on part or all of Power-Point® Plus, Partition Gold® Rifle, and one Hornet SKU
  • Did not harm barrel
  • For optimum performance barrel "seasoning" was required
  • Could cause accuracy problems in some guns
